Social media company X, previously known as Twitter, now offers a feature allowing paid users to hide their verification checkmarks. This option was introduced last year when the company rebranded to Twitter Blue, which has since been renamed XBlue during the ongoing rebranding exercise under Elon Musk's ownership.
The company has updated its help page for paid subscriptions, titled 'About Twitter Blue,' stating that even if a user hides their checkmark, it might still be visible in certain places. However, no further details about these specific places were provided.
Subscribers can now choose to hide their checkmarks on their profiles and posts, although some features may reveal that they have an active subscription. Additionally, some features may be unavailable while the checkmark is hidden. The company assures its users that they will continue to refine this feature to improve user experience.
The option to hide the checkmark can be found in the "Profile customization" section of the account settings. Twitter had previously faced criticism regarding paid verification, as it was challenging to distinguish between legacy verified accounts of notable figures and users who had paid for verification.
Initially, Twitter removed legacy checkmarks in April, but later reinstated them for top accounts, regardless of payment. Since the relaunch, the company has introduced several features, including a 10,000-character limit for posts, a 3-hour-long video upload limit, reduced ads on the timeline, and ad revenue sharing for subscribed users to encourage increased platform engagement. In May, encrypted direct messages (DMs) were enabled for verified users.
