Earlier today, a forum post at ResetEra pointed out a leaked listing on the PlayStation Direct site (via IGN) that confirmed the previously rumored PS5 remake of The Last of Us — the first one, that is — and its release date of September 2nd.
There was also word that a PC version is "in development." That sets up Joel and Ellie's adventure to follow in the footsteps of the PC ports for updated older PlayStation exclusives like God of War, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
During the Summer Game Fest 2022 event, the team from Naughty Dog confirmed all of that news with the official trailer and a few more details about the HBO series. In addition, it has more information about the standalone multiplayer game they're making, as well as details of the three versions of The Last of Us Part I that will be available this fall.
Given the popularity of The Last of Us, it's strange that this port hasn't been announced sooner. A blog post confirms what we can expect in the remake. It says, "We've implemented modernized gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options in this single-player experience to allow even more individuals to enjoy the game.

Effects, exploration, and combat have all been enhanced. Leveraging the PS5's powerful hardware, we also implemented 3D Audio, haptics, and adaptive triggers. As a result, returning fans and new players alike will have the opportunity to experience The Last of Us Part I and its prequel story Left Behind in a new way."
The expanded accessibility options are a positive change, and we expect they will pull from the much-improved suite of features that debuted with The Last of Us: Part II.
Much like The Last of Us Remastered release that was made for the PlayStation 4, this remake will include the Left Behind story DLC for everyone. The Standard Edition release will cost $69.99, while a Digital Deluxe Edition is $10 more and has early unlocks for several in-game items.
At the highest end, the Firefly Edition costs $99.99, and you can only get it from the PlayStation Direct website. It includes the unlock bonuses from the Digital Deluxe version, a SteelBook display case, and the four-issue comic series The Last of Us: American Dreams, with new cover art for each comic.
The Last of Us is an action-adventure play developed in 2013 by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Players control Joel and a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across the post-apocalyptic United States. The Last of Us is recreated from a third-person perspective. Players operate firearms and improvised weapons. In addition, it can use stealth to protect against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures contaminated by a mutated fungus in the genus Cordyceps. Up to eight players encounter cooperative and competitive gameplay in the online multiplayer mode.

Development of The Last of Us started in 2009, soon after the release of Naughty Dog's earlier game, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Naughty Dog split into two teams for the first time in the company's history; while one team designed Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, the other half organized The Last of Us.
The association between Joel and Ellie became the focus, with all other elements created around it. Actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson illustrated Joel and Ellie, respectively, through voice and motion capture and helped creative director Neil Druckmann develop the characters and story. The original score was penned and performed by Gustavo Santaolalla.
It was widely anticipated following its announcement in December 2011. It was unleashed for the PlayStation 3 in June 2013. It received critical acclaim, praising visuals, sound design, narrative, gameplay, characterization, and depiction of female characters. It evolved into one of the best-selling video games, trading over 1.3 million units in its first week and 17M by April 2018. The game triumphed in year-end accolades, including multiple Game of the Year honors, from several gaming publications, critics, and game award ceremonies. In addition, it has been mentioned as one of the most significant video games ever made.
Naughty Dog released many downloadable content additions; The Last of Us: Left Behind counts a single-player drive following Ellie and her best friend, Riley. A remastered version of the game, titled The Last of Us Remastered, was released for the PlayStation 4 in July 2014. The Last of Us Part II, a sequel, was released in June 2020.
A remake of the game, titled The Last of Us Part I, is set to release in September 2022 for PlayStation 5 and later for Microsoft Windows. A television adaptation is presently in production by HBO, written by Druckmann and Craig Mazin and starring Bella Ramsey as Ellie and Pedro Pascal as Joel.
The Last of Us is an American post-apocalyptic television series set to air on HBO. Based on the 2013 video game created by Naughty Dog, the series will track Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler entrusted with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the post-apocalyptic United States. It will also showcase Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Joel's younger brother and an ex-soldier.

The series, said to be the most significant television production in Canadian history, started filming in Calgary, Alberta, in July 2021 and is predicted to end in June 2022. It is the first HBO series established on a video game and is a joint production by PlayStation Productions, Sony Pictures Television, The Mighty Mint, Naughty Dog, and Word Games. The first season will consist of ten episodes written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann; the latter wrote and directed the game. Original game composer Gustavo Santaolalla will compose the score, and Kantemir Balagov will direct the pilot episode. The first season is expected to debut in 2023.
