Reddit has taken control of r/malefashionadvice, previously the largest subreddit that remained closed in protest of the platform's API pricing changes. However, the subreddit is now open again, but with certain restrictions in place. Only specific users are allowed to create new posts while others can browse the content.
The situation unfolded when the moderators of r/malefashionadvice, with over 5 million subscribers, made the community private and directed users to Discord and Substack. They anticipated being replaced after receiving a message from a Reddit admin named ModCodeofConduct, stating they would be removed if they didn't reopen the subreddit.
As of Thursday, three former moderators of r/malefashionadvice confirmed that they were indeed removed. The current modlist only shows ModCodeofConduct as the sole moderator. Despite the subreddit's "restricted" status, someone managed to post an invitation on Thursday for community members to join the Discord.
The Discord community seems to be gaining popularity, with the number of users growing from 2,000 to 5,000. Former moderators "Walker" and "Zach" expressed their positive experiences with the community on Discord.
Other subreddits also have ModCodeofConduct as their only moderator, such as r/ShittyLifeProTips, r/AccidentalRenaissance, r/oldbabies, r/BeardAdvice, r/plumbingporn, and r/fordtransit. Notably, r/streetwear remains the largest subreddit still private, with Zach mentioning its subscriber count surpassing 4 million. The subreddit also operates a Discord server.
